Resumo: | Statins comprise a class of drugs that competitively inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, involved in cholesterol synthesis. They are used in the treatment of dyslipidemias and in the preventive treatment of cardiovascular diseases and in rare cases presents with rhabdomyolysis. Some studies suggest the use of statins as a possible treatment for Alzheimer's disease, as these drugs may act by decreasing the formation of amyloid plaques and neuroinflammation. This review sought to list the articles that support the use of statins in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and to identify other possible benefits or undesirable effects of the chronic use of these drugs. Despite the difficulty of developing an adequate and representative sample group, statin therapy has great potential to complement existing treatment and delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease. |
