description Rio Grande do Norte is one of the nine states of the Brazilian Northeastern region, with an area extending through 52.809.599 km², including 167 municipalities and two main biomes: the Caatinga and the Atlantic Forest and several ecosystems, and therefore great biological diversity. The present study aimed at evaluating the taxonomic representativeness of the Adalberto Antônio Varela-Freire Entomological Collection, relative to the entomofauna recorded for the state of Rio Grande do Norte based on different sources. The survey was conducted on public occurrence and specimen database records (GBIF, SIBBr and Species Link), literature and the inventory of the entomological collection. The records were filtered for locality (RN) and taxon (Class Insecta); only preserved specimen records were taken into account. This survey produced approximately 13.300 unique records. The insect orders with most records on databases are Hymenoptera, Diptera and Hemiptera, and mostly from the municipalities of Serra Negra do Norte, Natal and Mossoró. There was a significant discrepancy between the literature specimen records and those available from the specimen databases and the collection inventory. However, CEAAVF can in fact be considered to be representative for the potiguar entomofauna, with samples obtained from at least one municipality from each geographical microregion of the state. It is necessary to reinforce with the research community the importance of maintaining records and vouchers of the specimens collected for study, as well as their sending vouchers to regional collections, so that these sources can be informative for future use, providing reference data for environmental conservation policies, pest monitoring and insect vector surveillance and control.

O Rio Grande do Norte é um dos nove estados do nordeste brasileiro, com 52.809.599 km², dividido em 167 municípios, apresentando dois Biomas, Caatinga e Mata Atlântica, bem como vários ecossistemas, possuindo assim grande diversidade biológica. Este trabalho tem como por objetivo avaliar a representatividade taxonômica da Coleção Entomológica Adalberto Antônio Varela-Freire em relação à diversidade entomofaunística registrada no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte a partir de diferentes fontes. Foi realizado um levantamento em bases de dados sobre ocorrência e registro de espécimes para o Brasil (GBIF, SiBBr e Species Link), literatura e inventário da CEAAVF. Foram aplicados filtros de localidade (RN) e táxon (classe Insecta); apenas registros de espécimes preservados foram considerados. Neste levantamento foram obtidos 13.300 registros. Observou-se que as ordens com maior número de registros em bases de dados são Hymenoptera, Diptera e Hemiptera, sendo a maioria destas ocorrências nas cidades de Serra Negra do Norte, Natal e Mossoró. Pode-se observar que há grande discrepância entre registros publicados na literatura, nos bancos de dados e aqueles constantes no acervo local; apesar disso, considera-se que a CEAAVF é representativa para a entomofauna potiguar, contemplando ao menos um município de cada microrregião do Estado.
