The Brazilian northeast has most of its territory with a predominance of the Caatinga biome, this ecosystem is of great importance in the biological sense because it contains endemic species. This region, so rich and abundant in biodiversity and endemism, has been suffering a lot for years with anthropic interference. The caatinga is the third most degraded biome in Brazil, second only to the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado. The caatinga is in 4th place among the areas most affected by fire, according to monitoring data from the National Institute for Space Research. Population densification and the installation of wind farms can compromise the ecosystem balance of the region, as they facilitate the degradation of vegetation and soil through the reduction of vegetation cover, the increase in erosion processes and the occurrence of forest fires that lead to the deterioration of properties physical, chemical and biological aspects of habitats. The present work aims to analyze how the implementation of wind farms influences the occurrence of forest fires in the Caatinga area in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. We used different sources of spatial data to carry out this work. The bases for the location of the wind turbines and the beginning of the year of operation were obtained directly from the ANAEEL website in table format *.xls. As each wind turbine had its spatial coordinates, this table was converted into a vector file of points in shapefile format. The files on the amount of burned area were obtained from the Mapbiomas Fire 1.0 collection on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. We used data from burned areas from 1995 to 2020. The average percentage of burned area in the vicinity of the wind turbines is low, always less than 1%, considering the two time points analyzed, and in general there was no difference in the general comparison (t=0.320; p=0.750) nor in the comparisons of aeolian regions. We were unable to identify a significant effect on the increase in the percentage of burned area after implementing a wind turbine. The same amount of fires that occurred in the area before having the wind turbine continue to have after, showing that there is no significant effect of the implantation of wind turbines that cause an increase in the area of fires. |
