Resumo:Debates on sustainable development have been discussed by several events promoted by international organizations, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact on the planet. When we look at the scenario of countries like Brazil, this agenda is still little addressed, even with the existence of programs, environmental legislation, projects and initiatives aimed at stimulating environmental education. In this context, libraries can be key pieces in this process, contributing to the dissemination of sustainability, promoting actions and projects that make the community think about the future of humanity. Thus, this research covers this theme, with the main objective of discussing green and sustainable libraries, as well as demonstrating the importance of the responsibility of the librarian in the face of socio-environmental issues and the dissemination of environmental information. Through the research methodology of a bibliographic and documentary nature, it was possible to establish the main concepts of green and sustainable library, environmental information and the socioenvironmental role of the librarian. Subsequently, explore institutional websites, blogs, articles, which made it possible to present references and inspirations of green libraries or those with sustainable projects, in order to encourage governments, public/private institutions and, especially, the managers of information units that are essential for the process of sustainable development. However, it is remarkable that the responsibility for the librarian's action in advancing the critical thinking of the community referring to environmental causes is extremely important and libraries should be the pole of this much-needed evolution for sustainable development.
