Resumo:Certain events can gain weight to impact the memories of future generations, depending on how it was portrayed and passed on through time. This is due to the impressions that each person has about it and how, through the mark that the phenomenon generated, they pass on or try to pass on its events through records, generating a personal vision about what happened. And these can manifest themselves in several ways, generating an air of historicity within them, since they create myths about it, even if these are not entirely true. One of these events is the foundation of the city of Natal, which took place in 1599, at the end of the 16th century. For some years, it was the target of debates about its main responsibility, once three important figures were protagonists of the occurrence: Jerônimo de Albuquerque Maranhão, Manuel Mascarenhas Homem and João Rodrigues Colaço. Each of them, each in his own way, were targets of versions in which they became protagonists and founders of the city. Because of this, there was an air of uncertainty, generating several doubts, often without a direct answer. One of them would be how events like this do and many others gain relevance to the point of becoming part of history, generating a legacy? Moreover, another of these questions would be what are the requirements for the transformation of a certain event into a historical fact? For all these reasons, the main objective of this End of Course Work was to find answers to these questions based on the events about the birth of the City of Natal, enlightening the reader about the real function of memory within many historical events, as a way to understand how the reality of that place is nowadays. Because of this, there is a concern in applying procedures and techniques that must be observed for the construction of knowledge, with the purpose of proving its validity and usefulness in the several ambits of society, as well as the phenomena related to the foundation of the city, besides others belonging not only to history, but to its daily life will be remembered in order to find its association with the phenomena and processes referring to memories. For this, the terms linked to this universe will be approached and conceptualized so that they understand and assemble with the addressed event in this work. The concept of social memory will be one of the highlighted terms, since it will refer to how local events always will preserves throughout time. Finally, based on the data and history, conclusions will give about how memory works to keep alive the memories, reports, and historicity about past events that generated certain places that we know today. With this, the importance of this work should to explain as a way to explain why memory has this role of keeping alive the history of certain places so that future generations will never forget their origins and preserve their history as if they were parts of themselves. From this point on, certain places that each person calls home will become heritage sites, that is, places that cannot be changed or altered by commercial factors that use the destruction of old immaterial places from centuries past. Then, what many people love or were part of in the past will not only remain within the memories of each person, but will continue to live, outwardly.
