Resumo:The large volume of information production has made it indispensable to know how to handle what is being accessed, being necessary to develop skills that provide the evaluation and dissemination of information in a critical and reflective way. Information literacy assumes this role, building in the individual strategies that are used throughout life, enabling the characteristic of a continuous learner, fundamental in the work, social and economic environment and in the quality of life. The citizen, being all those who enjoy and exercise their rights, armed with information literacy, will be able to have the knowledge that allows them to distinguish false from true information, to better understand their role within society and to know more about their rights that are guaranteed by law, thus being able to organize themselves to fight for the fulfillment of what they have been assured. This work, therefore, aims to investigate how the literature on information literacy correlates with the notion of citizenship in contemporary society. The inductive approach method was used, with the technique of exploratory and bibliographic research, thus, the theoretical framework is built through the bibliographic survey and the analysis of the selected sources. The conclusion reached was that information literacy is a mediating agent of transformation within the information society, as it enables the individual to acquire competencies and abilities that make them capable of performing actions within the world that surround them in a critical and reflective way. Thus, it helps in the exercise of citizenship by creating in the citizen the awareness of their rights and duties.
