Resumo:The research presented in this work addresses the implications of non-adoption and the difficulties young people face when they turn 18 and need to leave foster care. The main goal was to know the barriers young people who are not adopted face when leaving foster care institutions in Brazil. In order to meet this goal, we developed bibliographic research through readings of books, dissertations, and articles by several authors who approached their works with the themes addressed in this work, such as childhood, adolescence, youth, adoption, institutional care, and social policies. Data were also collected from sites such as “IBGE”, “IPEA”, “CNJ” and the “Ministério da Cidadania.” As a result, several barriers were observed, such as the cut and preference of children based on class, race, and gender, considering that most of the children available for adoption are black while the preference among adopters are white girls; moreover, the absence of specific public policies for these young people, in addition to the lack of support and preparation before the age of 18 when it comes to the issue of professionalization and guaranteeing access to housing.
