Resumo:The problem of loss of adhesion between rails and vehicle wheels has always been present in rail transport, which can make travel unfeasible in unfavorable situations. Since the 19th century, so-called sandbox systems have been used, whose function is to expel sand or other abrasive materials in the vicinity of the contact surface between the wheels and the rails. The fleet of Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs), inserted in Natal in 2014 by the CBTU, however, does not have sandboxes, which is a problem especially on rainy days. In this context, the present work aims to design a sandbox system for CBTU-Natal’s vehicles, addressing its operation, materials, costs, dimensioning and installation. This work deals with an initial proposal for the implementation of sandboxes in CBTU-Natal fleet and needs continuity in the more detailed survey of costs, component manufacturing processes, dimensioning and insertion tests in the LRVs. As a material for the sand container, the present proposal suggests polycarbonate (PC) due to its chemical stability, excellent mechanical properties, transparency and low density. For the compressed air outlet system and sand flow channel, the use of aluminum alloys is suggested due to their low density, low cost, low porosity, resistance to oxidation and ease of work, with emphasis on the binary Al-Si and ternary Al-Mg-Si.
