Resumo:The present work has as main objective to carry out a literature review regarding the mitigating effects of physical exercise on the incidence of depression in the elderly, analyzing the effectiveness of this practice as possible therapy with another treatments to combat depression. To achieve the objective, the work carried out a review of articles in Portuguese in the SciELO databases from January 1999 to November 2019, using the keywords "depression", "elderly" and "exercise". Initially, in the SciELO research, 32 articles were found that spoke about the selected keywords. Of these 32 articles, only 14 were selected for the first reading. Of the 14 selected, 6 were excluded because they deal with physical training methods and other types of technical procedures in physical education classes, subjects that are not relevant to the work, which totaled the choice of eight articles for discussion. It was concluded that the benefits of physical exercise are overwhelming and self-evident in all reviewed articles, showing its psychological and physical benefits in depressed elderly, promoting the prevention and reduction of depressive symptoms.
