From bibliographic and documentary research, the public space and the transformations suffered by it over time were initially presented, besides the concept and differentiation between public space and collective space and the reflection of this in the new configuration of urbanity of cities, which is directly related to the concept of socio-spatial segregation widely observed today in society. Subsequently, the central object of the work, the squares, was conceived, based on their definitions, characteristics and functions. And in the third chapter, several aspects related to the public squares of Natal were explored, seeking to quantify and characterize them from the socioeconomic profiles of the administrative regions and some neighborhoods, beyond to the aesthetic conditions and their preservation. So, it was concluded that the squares when well planned, structured and managed constitute an example of an element of full development of the social function of cities, as defined by the Federal Constitution, ratifying the importance of squares in the urban life of cities. O presente trabalho buscou produzir um estudo teórico sobre as praças públicas do município de Natal, demonstrando a importância do papel desempenhado pelas praças na cidade e na vida cotidiana dos cidadãos. A partir de pesquisas bibliográficas e documentais, apresentou-se inicialmente o espaço público e as transformações sofridas pelo mesmo ao longo do tempo, além do conceito e a diferenciação entre espaço público e espaço coletivo e o reflexo disso na nova configuração de urbanidade das cidades, a qual está diretamente relacionada ao conceito de segregação socioespacial bastante observado atualmente na sociedade. Posteriormente, conceituou-se o objeto central do trabalho, as praças, tomando por base suas definições, características e funções. E no terceiro capítulo, explorou-se diversos aspectos relacionados às praças públicas de Natal, buscando quantificar e caracterizar as mesmas a partir dos perfis socioeconômicos das regiões administrativas e de alguns bairros, ademais das condições estéticas e de preservação delas.
