Resumo:Previous studies have indicated that attractiveness can be modified by changing social status; this effect can occur through the possession of consumer goods, such as luxury cars and apartments. The present study aims to assess whether the status and the economic value of smartphones affects the perception that third parties have about the mate value and physical attractiveness of stimulus subjects, and whether there is a difference between sex and age group in this assessment. To this end, the study participants (N = 200/100 men and women), divided into sex and grouped into three age groups (young adults, middle-aged adults and old age) evaluated three stimulus subjects – previously selected by a jury (N = 30 / 10 men and 15 women) of the opposite sex who belonged to one of two conditions: luxury cell phone and popular cell phone. When evaluating the models present in the research, participants were required to indicate the mate value (Mate value scale) and the level of physical attractiveness of the models (scale ranging from 1-10). The results of the experimental study indicated that, for male participants, the mating value of female stimulus subjects was proportionally correlated with the perception of their physical attractiveness, with no variation between age groups, while for women, age of the participants were correlated proportionally with the evaluations of the mating value and attractiveness of the male stimulus subjects. In addition, a marginal difference was observed for the condition referring to the mating value, with models in popular cell treatment obtaining higher marks than models in luxury cell treatment. With regard to attractiveness, it was not possible to notice a difference between conditions, only differences between genders and between ages - with men attributing higher values of physical attractiveness to female models, and women attributing greater attractiveness to models due to your age.
