Resumo: | Food is important for all animal species. Its temporal availability seems to be a relevant signal for organization of behavioral and physiological parameters. When food is restricted for a few hours a day, rats and mice exhibit anticipatory activity to the mealtime (food-anticipatory activity, FAA). Many evidences suggest that this anticipation is mediated by a food-entrainable oscillator (FEO) with circadian properties, located outside the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the light-entrainable oscillator. However, the mechanisms by which food entrainment occurs and the locus of the FEO are unclear. In this review are summarized data about possible input pathways to the FEO and its putative localization. In addition, data related to the effects of food on the SCN are discussed. Besides, food-anticipatory activity in other mammals and non-mammals are reviewed. |
