description This research aims to understand, through the professional's perspective, how professionals assisting postpartum women at the referral hospital for maternal and child care in Caicó/RN, in Seridó Potiguar, in the context in which the woman does not want to breastfeed. This is a qualitative-descriptive research, which was developed with nurses, nursing technicians and nutritionists from the Human Milk Bank, nursery and obstetrics sectors of Hospital do Seridó, located in Caicó/RN. For data analysis, Bardin's content analysis was used, which aims to critically explore the narrative of individuals about a certain theme. The method proposed by Bardin allows the formation of analytical categories, a fact that allowed the author to analyze the workers' discourses according to a homogeneous line of discussion. In this sense, five categories were formed that deal with the perception of professionals about the motivation for women not wanting to breastfeed, about the priorities that women should list as mothers, the feelings of workers when they become aware that women do not want to breastfeed, their professional conduct, and satisfaction with their own knowledge about the subject and the management of women who do not wish to breastfeed. The study was able to verify that most of the professionals interviewed act in order to try to convince the woman to adhere to breastfeeding, where a greater number of these workers feel dissatisfied with their own knowledge that subsidizes their work. In addition, professionals report negative affects when they are informed that a mother does not want to breastfeed.

Este estudo tem como objetivo compreender, através do olhar do profissional, como se dá a atuação de profissionais da assistência às puérperas do hospital de referência em atenção materno-infantil de Caicó/RN, no Seridó Potiguar, no contexto no qual a mulher não deseja amamentar. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de ordem qualitativa-descritiva, que foi desenvolvida junto a enfermeiras, técnicas de enfermagem e nutricionista dos setores de banco de leite humano, berçário e obstetrícia do Hospital do Seridó, localizado em Caicó/RN. Para análise de dados utilizou-se a análise do conteúdo de Bardin, que visa explorar de forma crítica a narrativa de indivíduos acerca de uma determinada temática. O método proposto por Bardin, possibilita a formação de categorias analíticas, fator que permitiu ao autor a análise dos discursos dos trabalhadores de acordo com uma linha de discussão homogênea. Neste sentido, foram formadas cinco categorias que versam sobre a percepção dos profissionais acerca da motivação para a mulher não desejar amamentar, acerca das prioridades que a mulher deveria elencar enquanto mãe, dos sentimentos dos trabalhadores quando tomam conhecimento de que a mulher não quer amamentar, a sua conduta profissional, e a satisfação profissional com o próprio conhecimento acerca da temática e do manejo para com a mulher que não deseja amamentar. O estudo pôde verificar que a maioria dos profissionais entrevistados age de modo a tentar convencer a mulher a aderir a amamentação, onde grande parte desses trabalhadores sentem-se insatisfeitos com o próprio conhecimento que subsidia sua atuação.
