Resumo:The basic sanitation in Brazil began to evolve slowly, from the pre-colonial period, as it sought to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants. At the present study, the city of Currais Novos/RN will be pointed out and how its sanitation indices are presented, as well as the importance of alignment with the Municipal Master Plan arising from the City Statute, and with regard to Municipal Policy. These observations may be reflected in a more effective public policy. Still, it seeks to guarantee sanitation as a fundamental right and the protection of the existential minimum for a more dignified life, which does not negatively affect the population, health and infrastructure. Furthermore, the guidelines of Law 14.026/2020, the New Legal Framework for Sanitation which amends Law 11.445/2007, are briefly presented. The methodology applied consists in qualitative and quantitative analysis of indices and incidence of municipal sanitation. For this, data collection is used in the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS) and in the Municipal Basic Sanitation Plan. The investigation still finds support in bibliographic and legislative research. It is concluded that it is possible to note that the city has good indicators of water coverage and solid waste collection, but it lacks coverage of the sewage system.
