Resumo:Water security has become an extremely important issue in society, as it determines the conditions in which a locality finds itself in relation to the availability (quantity and quality) of water for the supply of its population and the activities that require a contribution. water. The northeast region is a region with high vulnerability, being severely punished by extreme droughts. In this sense, developing measures that make the semiarid region a region with stability and low water vulnerability is a challenge that has been faced through public works and policies that guarantee access to water for all. To assist in the definition of public policies, indexes are used that determine the situation of water security in relation to various aspects. Within the scope of the National Water Security Plan (PNSH), the Water Security Index (ISH) was developed, based on four dimensions: human, ecosystem, economic and resilience. This index seeks to portray the different dimensions of water security, incorporating the concept of risk to water uses. In this sense, the present work used the water security index (ISH) at the municipal level, in Currais Novos, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, to assess the water security of the municipality. Noting that the dimensions presented from low to minimum degree of security, thus classifying the municipality with the degree of water security of minimum level.
