Resumo:Coastal communities in one hand are largely dependent on natural resources. On the other hand, small-scale fisheries and aquaculture are of great importance for the food and financial security of the population. Artisanal fishing has been suffering from several adversities while the aquaculture sector, especially in the last decade, has progressed. In this study, the characteristics of the two activities are compared with questionnaires on the socioeconomic conditions of the workers involved in the activities, in the district of Barra do Cunhaú in the municipality of Canguaretama, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The results show that: shrimp farming affects 15% of the local mangrove area but has not expanded in the last eight years; Shrimp farm workers are more educated and receive better wages compared to fishermen; there are two types of fishing in the region: the first lasts 3 to 5 days at sea and captures five times more (kg/fisherman) than fishing practiced in just one day; a small part of the fishermen have already tried to be employed by shrimp farms, but almost all do not think about changing their activity; Fisheries and shrimp workers use government aid. In Barra do Cunhaú there are no apparent conflicts between activities.
