Resumo:This article is a literature review, whose research was carried out in scientific databases. Alcohol dependence is considered a disease, it has an important role in the public health scenario and is directly related to a series of damages generated in the life of the dependent and the society that surrounds him. It is known that chronic alcohol consumption interferes with neurotransmission systems and, among them, with the serotonergic system. The treatment of alcohol dependence currently encompasses drugs that can be abused, so there is a need to study new potential allies in the treatment of this pathology. Preclinical and clinical studies indicates that the use of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists in the treatment of conditions related to disorders generated by the use, abuse, dependence and withdrawal of alcohol has good results. These drugs can act by decreasing consumption and abuse, increasing patients' abstinence time, as well as being able to reverse the adverse effects generated by withdrawal. Thus, the studies found on the subject shows good and safe results, including in humans, suggesting the use of these drugs in the different stages of alcohol dependence.
