Resumo:Environmental control corresponds to actions that aim to inspect and correct actions that may affect the environment and aim to protect it. In the Brazilian context, there is the Amazon forest, known for its vast extension, which covers 09 Brazilian states, and for its great biodiversity. In this sense, it is important to verify the limits of environmental control in combating deforestation in the Legal Amazon in its 03 stages: licensing, inspection and monitoring (and other a posteriori actions). For this, a research of an investigative and expository nature of the legislation is proposed, starting from of each stage of environmental control, analyzing whether the actions taken by the competent environmental agency were carried out effectively in the years 2019 and 2020. The methodology used was the analysis of the pertinent legislation, academic works on the subject and legal proceedings with the objective of environmental control in the legal Amazon in the context of illegal deforestation. It was found that there are flaws in the 03 stages of environmental control carried out in the fight against illegal deforestation in the Amazon for reasons such as the lack of information regarding licensing by the responsible environmental agencies and the process of holding violators accountable, which is usually slow.
