Resumo:Objective: to identify the types and purposes of simulation in undergraduate nursing education. Method: integrative review of literature publications in 2010-2015. Of the 2,095 studies found, nine were selected for analysis by the inclusion criteria. Results: the studies are distributed in eight journals; the year 2014 had the highest number of publications (33.3%). From the qualitative analysis emerged two categories: types of simulation used in undergraduate nursing education; the simulation and the acquisition of skills and abilities. As for the types of simulation, those based on computer analysis are most often used. The purposes are diverse and involved the development of clinical skills, maternal care, newborn and child registration, diagnosis and nursing interventions, critical thought, communication and teamwork. Conclusion: the types and purposes of simulation in nursing identified signal the diversity and breadth of simulation as a teaching and learning strategy in nursing education.
