Resumo:Contamination of water causes major environmental impacts. Advanced Oxidative Processes (POAs) can be highlighted as alternative and efficient methods that reduce environmental impacts. The effectiveness of POAs depends on the generation of reactive free radicals, the most important being the hydroxyl radical (•OH), however, other oxidizing species can be electrochemically generated and used in environmental applications such as persulfate. In this work, the in-situ Chemical Oxidation technique was used, through the application of persulfate for the treatment of wastewater from the treatment and sewage plant of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. The persulfate-electrochemically generated POA was evaluated as an alternative not fed into the electrical grid (off-grid) showing a modest efficiency in reduxing dissolved organic matter in the effluents, as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), resulting in a process with less energy consumption when compared to an on-grid technology.
