Resumo:Pregnancy and childbirth are evidenced as biopsychosocial events, which make up a process of transition from woman to mother status marked by complex physiological, psychological and interpersonal transformations that require adaptations during and after her journey, thus making the pregnancy cycle. puerperal an individual process that requires special care. Parturition can be lived as a pleasurable or traumatic experience, and this experience is influenced by previous personal and family experiences, as well as the care received during prenatal and childbirth.The objective of this study is to analyze the perception of the mothers about the assistance to normal childbirth in a public maternity in the sertó potiguar backlands. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted with 20 parturients during a hospital in the city of Caicó / RN that provides obstetric care. The results revealed that the parturients had favorable and unfavorable perceptions regarding normal delivery. Regarding the favorable perception, the attitudes of health professionals, the guarantee of a trusted companion, as well as the encouragement of the parturient's autonomy and use were highlighted. Regarding non-pharmacological methods of pain relief, unfavorable perception was typified by the strong predominance of the model of care focused on the figure of the physician and the imposition of mechanized behavior and actions. This study is expected to contribute to the reorientation of professional attitudes and attitudes, so that they are consistent with the proposals of the National Humanization Policy, as well as to strengthen the Public Policies for women's health care.
