Resumo: | Objective: To report the experience of the dental surgeon resident in the Extension Project
“Tongue Test: application of the protocol and treatment in babies in Seridó Potiguar”, in the
city of Caicó - RN. Method: This is a descriptive, qualitative study in the category of experience
reporting, with the purpose of describing the experience of implementing an extension project
for the diagnosis and treatment of ankyloglossia in Seridó Potiguar, from the perspective of
dentistry. Results: The extension project offers daily the Tongue Test for newborns at the
Seridó Hospital Unit, in the municipality of Caicó-RN, since 2018, and includes professional
dental surgeons and speech therapists from the Multiprofessional Residency Program in
Primary Care (PRMAB) of the Multicampi School of Medical Sciences (EMCM). Until
December 2019, 1125 tests and 72 frenotomies were performed. The extension activity
developed has allowed an early approach with changes in the lingual frenulum of newborns,
favoring quality breastfeeding, avoiding early weaning and ensuring longitudinal monitoring of
these changes, in addition to contributing to the training of residents. Conclusion: The
development of extension actions made it possible to expand access to the tongue test for the
community in the Seridó region, thus strengthening attention to children's health in the region. |
