Resumo:Health services that provide emergency care are nationally and internationally facing problems. Overcrowding due to high rates of care sensitive to primary care stands out as the main reason for the current situation in emergency care equipment. This study aimed to know the demands and the profile of patients attending the Currais Novos Emergency Room, Rio Grande do Norte. Data were analyzed through descriptive analysis, as well as estimated prevalence for the outcome - cases sensitive to primary care. Data were collected from 720 reports from the health service, the majority group were female (54%), the predominant age group from 0 to 4 years old (11.4%). These atendiments were concentrated on the morning shift (41.7%) and on weekdays (70.6%). Most users were from Basic Health Units in the urban area and 76.0% had a physician in the reference unit. The plurality of cases was classified as inappropriate for the service (55.4%), as they were of competence and resolving capacity of primary care. Of the most prevalent causes, it is worth mentioning the involvement of the gastrointestinal tract (23.3%), diverse causes (18.8%) and otorhinolaryngological / respiratory (17.8%). Basically, the same distribution pattern was maintained among cases sensitive to primary care. Recognition of the demands and the profile of the patients is of paramount importance, given that this will be the basis for the adoption of more adequate tools for better resource management and service delivery ensuring comprehensive care through the Urgency and Emergency Network its primary and guiding element, Primary Health Care.
