Resumo:The tongue is one of the muscles of extreme importance in the functions of sucking, swallowing, chewing and speaking, besides being responsible for the development of the structures around it. It may present a congenital pathological condition called ankyloglossia (tongue tie), that is, an abnormally short frenulum causing detrimental limitations of the movements. Such a condition can lead to problems in the development of the stomatognathic system, speech development and impairments in breastfeeding and development as a whole. PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of factors associated with ankyloglossia in newborns up to the first semester of life in the city of Currais Novos. METHOD: The babies were submitted to the "Protocol of assessment of the lingual frenulum with scores for infants" for the data collection, in the reference center where the project "Baby health" takes place. The data collected during the research underwent a descriptive statistical analysis by the SPSS 20.0 program and made associations among the variables. RESULTS: A total of 313 newborns were evaluated and 55 (17.6%) cases of ankyloglossia were found as results. The proportion of 33 (21.7%) males and 22 (13.7%) females with ankyloglossia was found, and 10 factors associated were significant. CONCLUSION: The study can diagnose and evidence, from the tool used, the main factors linked to the pathology in question. These are: tiredness to suck; resting lips, tongue during crying, tongue tip during crying, fixation of the frenulum on the sublingual face, fixation of the frenulum on the buccal floor, non-nutritive sucking, sucking rhythm with pause, coordination between suction / deglutition / breathing and tongue cracking in suction.
