Resumo:Purpose: to describe the performance of vocabulary in elementary and elementary school students in the city of Caicó – RN. Méthods: this is a cross-sectional study of a quantitative nature, carried out with 75 students from 3 to 7 years of age enrolled in 3 municipal schools in the municipality of Caicó-RN.The instrument applied was the Vocabulary Trial Test-TRILHAR that evaluates aspects of reception and expression. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics with mean and standard deviation; in the analytical statistic the Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to correlate the performance and the variable age, the Mann-Whitney test correlating with the sex variable and the Sperman correlation. Significant value adopted was p <0.05. Results: schooling presented better performance in receptive than in expressive triage, there was a positive correlation between age and performance in the instrument and did not have a statistically significant difference between sex and performance. Conclusions: vocabulary is important for the development and acquisition of language skills. Therefore, vocabulary screening tools aid in the identification and early treatment of children with deficits in this ability. Therefore, it is of great relevance for preventive actions in the scope of basic care, favoring more resolving and promoting a good academic and social development for these children.
