The methodology used in the study was an analytical process critically about the presence and approach to African and African-Brazilian history in the textbooks available in the Elementary School 1 in a public school, in comparison with the reality of educational practice in the classroom. It had as a theoretical reference the scientific productions inherent to theme and the Law nº. 10.639/03. Regarding the textbooks, the research revealed that the historiography production of books goes on insisting on highlight only the slavery period and little or nothing is dedicated to the contributions of Africans in the construction of Brazilian national identity. It is concluded that these books are not yet adequately prepared to meet the demands of the Law 10.639/03. In this sense it is necessary that teachers be prepared to realize these gaps in the books. The statements obtained from questionnaires given to teachers revealed that most of them are unprepared and unaware about the Law 10.639/03. In addition, it was found that there are no educational policies in the municipality aimed at full implementation of Law 10.639/03, as has been planned since 2003. A pesquisa tem como objetivo geral apresentar uma análise sobre a história africana e afro-brasileira nos livros didáticos de História utilizados em duas escolas do município de Currais Novos-RN, estabelecendo comparações com a lei 10.639/03. A metodologia utilizada no trabalho foi um processo analítico de forma crítica sobre a presença e abordagem da história africana e afro-brasileira nos livros didáticos, disponíveis para as séries iniciais em duas escolas públicas, em confronto com a realidade da prática educacional em sala de aula. Teve como referência teórica as produções científicas inerentes ao tema e à lei 10.639/03. Em relação aos manuais didáticos a pesquisa revelou que a produção historiográfica dos livros continua insistindo em destacar apenas o período escravista e pouco ou nada se dedica às contribuições dos africanos na construção de identidade nacional brasileira. Conclui-se que esses livros ainda não estão satisfatoriamente preparados para responder à demanda da lei 10.639/03. Nesse sentido, faz-se necessário que os professores estejam preparados para perceber essas lacunas nos livros. As declarações obtidas dos questionários aplicados aos professores revelaram que a maioria deles estão despreparados e desconhece a lei 10.639/03.
