Resumo:Introduction: The loss of mobility, common in critically ill patients affects several organs and systems, helping to reduce the functional capacity and the generation of musculoskeletal disorders such as muscle weakness and musculoskeletal deformities. Early mobilization has been used as a method of reducing the effects of prolonged immobility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of early mobilization in respiratory and musculoskeletal systems. Methods: A literature search was conducted through the electronic databases Medline, Lilacs and Scielo, between the period of 2006-2016, using the key words: "early mobilization", "intensive care unit" (ICU) "early mobilization", "intensive care unit (ICU)", "physiotherapy". Results and discussion: Based on the analysis of the studies, it was found that the implementation of mobilization early on brought many benefits, including increased muscle strength, improved functional capacity, improvement in respiratory parameters, decrease the duration of mechanical ventilation and hospitalization hospital and mortality reduction, showcasing the importance of its applicability in reducing the deleterious effects of immobilization.
