Resumo:The leaf litter decomposition is a fundamental process for the cycling of nutrients in terrestrial ecosystems. The quality of available resources will determine the action of the decomposing community. The characteristics of the resource may be associated with the diversity of leaves present in the litter. The objective of this work was to verify if the richness of herbaceous leaves has a synergic or antagonistic effect on the degradation of leaves of Caatinga tree species with different leaf hardness. The study was carried out by installing litterbags that were exposed for three months in the field at FLONA de Açu, ICMBio, RN, in the Project of Restoration to Combat Desertification area, this project is coordinated by the Restoration Ecology Laboratory (LER,) Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, UFRN. Leaves were subsequently removed from the field and weighted to verify biomass loss due to decomposition. The results show a greater effect of herbaceous richness on Amburana cearensis, the species with lower foliar hardness, being much less expressive in Combretum leprosum, the species with higher foliar hardness. The results show that the leaf diversity of the herbaceous species in the restored area plays an important role in enhancing leaf decomposition of some tree species.
