Biofuels are a topic that currently generates high expectations, both in population and in the scientific community. Brazil is considered and recognized as a widely diverse country, being the leader in global production potential of plant-based biofuels. With advantageous features in their favor, biofuels are considered environmentally friendly. As an incentive to enter smallholders in the production chain and for there to have social inclusion, it was established the Programa Nacional de Produção e Uso do Biodisel (PNPB) [National Program for Production and Use of Biodiesel] and the Selo de Combustível Social [Social Fuel Label]. The Brazilian Northeast, even being limited in natural resources for agriculture, is rich when it refers to the great diversity of soil, vegetation and clime. It presents adequate conditions for the development of several oil plants with economic importance, not only for the food industry but also for the production of biodiesel. Therefore, the cultivation of raw materials that participate in the industrial production of biodiesel has a high potential for job creation. Being one of the few countries in the world able to cover its production for many purposes, including oilseeds, Brazil is the second in the world, both as produce rand as consumer of biodiesel. As much as the Northeast has its limitations regarding oil and accentuated climate, its supply and demand related to oilseed species help the region to be able to get potential to enter the supply chain of biodiesel. In this work, a literature review was conducted covering data from 2005 to 2015, in order to identify the potential of the Brazilian Northeast to the biodiesel industry.

Considerado como um dos grandes marcos da sociedade, o processo de geração de energia é uma referência da história da humanidade. Os biocombustíveis são temas que, na atualidade, geram grandes expectativas, tanto na população quanto na comunidade científica. O Brasil é considerado e reconhecido como um país amplamente diverso, líder com potencial de produção mundial de biocombustíveis de origem vegetal. Com características vantajosas a seu favor, os biocombustíveis são tidos como ecologicamente favoráveis. Como incentivo para inserir os pequenos agricultores na cadeia produtiva do setor e para que existisse a inclusão social, foram criados o Programa Nacional de Produção e Uso do Biodiesel (PNPB) e o Selo de Combustível Social. O Nordeste brasileiro, mesmo sendo limitado em recursos naturais para agricultura, é rico quanto a grande diversidade de solo, vegetação e clima. Apresenta condições adequadas para o desenvolvimento de diversas plantas oleaginosas com importância econômica, não só para a indústria alimentícia, mas também para produção de biodiesel. Com isso, o cultivo das matérias-primas que participam da produção industrial do biodiesel tem um elevado potencial para geração de emprego. Sendo um dos poucos países do mundo, capaz de abranger sua produção para vários fins, incluindo as oleaginosas, o Brasil se encontra em segundo lugar, tanto como produtor, quanto como consumidor mundial de biodiesel. Por mais que a região Nordeste obtenha suas limitações referentes a solo e clima acentuadas, sua oferta e demanda referente a espécies de oleaginosas ajuda a região para que seja possível obter potencial para entrar na cadeia produtiva de biodiesel.
