Among the changes caused by the new Forest Code ,2012, one of the points is the reduction of the Permanent Protection Area (PPA) range for rivers, given that it does not consider anymore the seasonal ground, but the regular ground for the PPA delimitation. The objectives were to map the PPAs for the EPZ 9 following the Forest Code and the CONAMA 303/2002, map the vegetation of the area, and finally compare the mapping of the PPAs of the Rio Doce between the new and the old Forest Code to spatialize and quantifying how much of native vegetation ceases to be protected using the software ArcGIS. The results demonstrate that there will be a reduction of approximately 74% of the area which will be no longer protected, and this includes the marsh areas and the riparian forest, which will negatively impact the ecosystem of the region. This work shows the fragility of the forest code in respect of the protected areas within the EPZ, and recommend some practices for recovering the degrade area within the context of urban and environmental planning. O Plano Diretor é quem controla o ordenamento urbano de uma cidade. Nesse contexto foram criadas 10 Zonas de Proteção Ambiental (ZPAs) no município de Natal/RN, e atualmente a ZPA 9 encontra-se em processo de regulamentação. Dentre as mudanças causadas pelo novo código florestal de 2012, um dos pontos é a redução da faixa de Área de Proteção Permanente (APPs) para rios, tendo em vista que não se considera mais o leito de maior cheia, e sim o leito regular para delimitação das APPs. Os objetivos do trabalho foram mapear as APPs da ZPA 9 através do código florestal e da CONAMA 303/2002, mapear a vegetação da área, e por último, comparar o mapeamento das APPs do Rio Doce entre o novo e o antigo código florestal para espacializar e quantificar o quanto de vegetação nativa da área deixa de ser protegida utilizando o software ArcGIS. Os resultados demonstram que ocorrerá uma redução de aproximadamente 74% de área que deixará de ser protegida, e nisso ficam inclusas as áreas de brejo e as áreas de mata ciliar, o que impactará negativamente o ecossistema da região.
