Resumo:Intestinal parasites are common in poor and developing countries. They represent a major public health problem because the high prevalence of these diseases constitutes a needy picture of the population in having their fundamental rights granted, such as access to quality water and basic sanitation. Symptoms associated with diarrhea, weight loss, malnutrition and other diseases responsible for high morbidity and mortality rates in the world are common to parasitic diseases. The prevalence of parasitic diseases in a hospital environment may constitute a worsening of the patient's clinical condition. The main objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of parasitic diseases and frequency of polyparasitism in patients attended at the Hospital Universitário Onofre Lopes, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Specifically, to verify the relationship between the occurrence of parasitosis by protozoa, helminths and polyparasitism, according to the life stage, the relation between the occurrence of parasitic diseases of great pathogenic potential according to the phase of life and to describe the species of intestinal parasites according to the phase of life and administrative districts of the municipality of Natal / RN. This is a cross-sectional study carried out with 987 patients seen during the year 2015. Data collection was done through access to the electronic database of the hospital to obtain the results of parasitological exams of feces. The results were demonstrated by absolute frequency and percentage, and the measure of association was demonstrated by 2 by Pearson. The results showed that the prevalence of parasitic diseases was 21% and the frequency of polyparasitism was 30%. The female sex was the most frequent (60.9%). The main groups affected were adults (50.7%) and elderly (28.0%). The parasitic diseases of great pathogenic potential were more frequent in children (70.4%, p<0.001). In particular, helminthiasis was more frequent in adults (41.9%). The distribution of polyparasitism was similar in all phases of life (p=0.883). The administrative region with the lowest proportion of positive results was the southern administrative district of Natal/RN (11.6%). It was concluded that the prevalence of parasitic diseases was high. It is recommended to perform the Parasitological Examination of Feces in the hospital admission in case of hospitalization, as a preventive measure of complications in the clinical situation of hospitalized patients, as well as the prevention of dissemination in the hospital environment either by direct contact or fecal-oral route.
