In this research the databases of the Ministry of Health of Brazil and the Virtual Health Library - VHL / LiLACS, Scielo and Pubmed were consulted. In the studies the advantages can be evidenced with regard to the reduction of the window in immunology, the rapidity of the results, allied to the high sensitivity of the diagnostic tests. These characteristics allowed the implantation of flowcharts in the public health network, which were planned and implemented with the objective of overcoming social, structural and operational barriers, allowing their execution in laboratories and non-laboratory environments. These tests are an important strategy to contain the spread of infection, since early detection of HIV has been used in some way to control its spread. A Síndrome da Imunodeficência Adquirida é um grave problema de saúde pública em escala global. Ao longo de quase 40 anos dessa pandemia, houve grandes avanços no diagnóstico dessa enfermidade. No presente estudo foi realizada uma revisão de literatura sobre a evolução do diagnóstico laboratorial da infecção pelo HIV, com ênfase na descrição dos testes rápidos. Nessa pesquisa foram consultadas as bases de dados do Ministério da Saúde do Brasil e da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde – BVS/ LILACS, SciELO e PubMed. Nos estudos pode-se evidenciar as vantagens dos novos métodos no que concerne à redução da janela imunológica, a rapidez dos resultados, aliado a alta sensibilidade dos testes diagnósticos. Tais características permitiram a implantação de fluxogramas na rede pública de saúde, os quais foram planejados e implementados, a fim de transpor as barreiras sociais, estruturais e operacionais, permitindo assim sua execução em ambientes laboratoriais e não laboratoriais.
