Resumo:Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is a serious public health problem in global. Over almost 40 years in this pandemic, there have been major advances in diagnosing disease. In the present study a review of the literature on the evolution of the HIV diagnosis, with emphasis on the description of the rapid tests. In this research the databases of the Ministry of Health of Brazil and the Virtual Health Library - VHL / LiLACS, Scielo and Pubmed were consulted. In the studies the advantages can be evidenced with regard to the reduction of the window in immunology, the rapidity of the results, allied to the high sensitivity of the diagnostic tests. These characteristics allowed the implantation of flowcharts in the public health network, which were planned and implemented with the objective of overcoming social, structural and operational barriers, allowing their execution in laboratories and non-laboratory environments. These tests are an important strategy to contain the spread of infection, since early detection of HIV has been used in some way to control its spread.
