Resumo:Chikungunya fever is an emerging disease in the Americas caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). In Brazil, 216,102 probable cases of Chikungunya fever were reported in 2016, which 25,542 cases occurred only in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The objective of this study was to analyze the Chikungunya fever epidemic occurred in the State of Rio Grande do Norte in 2016 and describe the clinical and epidemiological aspects observed during the outbreak. In this study, samples of whole blood, serum, plasma and fluids derived from lesions from patients attended at different Health Centers and Hospitals of the Public Network of the State were analyzed. The data were evaluated from the completion of the compulsory notification sheets sent with the biological samples. All samples received were tested for the Zika and CHIKV viruses by qRT-PCR and for Dengue viruses by RT-PCR. We analyzed 296 samples from January to September, and 128 cases were confirmed for CHIKV. Among the 25 municipalities that submitted samples for analysis, 14 of them presented CHIKV circulation. It was possible to observe a presentation of typical and atypical symptoms of the disease, besides manifestations in patients and newborns. The main clinical manifestations observed were fever, joint and muscle pain, headache, rash, back pain and photophobia. At present there are no published studies about the circulation of CHIKV in the State, nor even on the clinical manifestations caused by chikungunya fever. In this sense, this study allowed to describe the clinical and epidemiological aspects of the acute phase of the disease in the first Chikungunya epidemic in the State of Rio Grande do Norte.
