Resumo:This study focuses on analyzing and comparing wear from flat-to-flat contact in the dry and lubricated condition, the lubricant being castor oil, through the disc pin slip, in order to identify the influence of different wear conditions and friction coefficient. in the tribological behavior of the material and to assess whether the lubricant will be fit for use in the industry. A pin-to-disk tribometer configuration was used. The material used as test specimen was 4140 steel, with 304 austenitic stainless steel pin as counter body in contact according to parameters of V = 0.6 m/s, Load = 100 N, Duration = 15 min, Pressure = 3.5 MPa. Three trials were performed under each condition. The results indicate an average friction coefficient of 0.5, average wear of 1024 μm and mean mass change of 0.3g for dry contact, compared to an average friction coefficient of 0.1, average wear of 56 μm, average temperature of 30ºC and average mass variation of 0,04 g for the lubricated contact.
