Resumo:This is a preliminary study about the material used in the textile industry to coat the cylinders present in mercerizing machines. The caustic soda applied in the mercerization is an extremely degrading solution for these cylinders, which are coated to give durability to these components. Thinking about this, we wanted to characterize this material. The results of three tests (X-ray Diffraction - XRD, Thermogravimetry - TG and tensile test) will be brought to the chemical, thermal and mechanical characterization. Through the tensile test, the Young’s modulus and the maximum deformation of this material were quantified following the ASTM 2136 standard with 2 mm thickness specimens. A priori, the failure of the specimens occurred at an unexpected point due to the inadequacy of the test machine claws. In a second moment the tests were redone, obtaining satisfactory and expected results. The XRD and TGA test are complementary to the tensile tests in the characterization process to identify the chemical composition and thermal stability of the polymer.
