Resumo:AISI D2 steel is classified as cold working steel with high chromium and carbon content, has good abrasion resistance, and high hardness. The use of this steel in tools such as punching dies requires, among other things, that it undergoes wear, and consequently, its useful life is limited. The use of thermochemical treatments to increase surface hardness, corrosion resistance, and wear is already consolidated in the literature; however, it still faces challenges in scientific steel tools in cold work. Plasma technology to deal with an environmentally friendly technique currently has wide applicability. Thus, the objective of this work is to study the effect of depositions of the layers of TiyN e FexN, by plasma nitriding with cathodic cage, on the mechanical, physical-chemical and morphological properties of AISI D2 steel. Samples of AISI D2 steel with a size of 10 mm x 10 mm x 1.5 mm were nitrided by a cathodic cage using AISI 316 Stainless Steel and Grade 2 Titanium cage, for 4 hours at a temperature of 400°C for treatment with the Stainless Steel cage and 450 °C for the treatment of the cage with the Titanium cage, after the nitriding processes as were characterized using Optical Microscopy and Microhardness, where it appears that there was an increase in surface hardness, a well-defined layer of compounds separated in Ti2N for those nitrided only with a titanium cage, Fe2-3N for nitrided only with the Stainless-Steel Cage and layer by layer, for those that were submitted as two nitrations.
