Resumo:The use of fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) has been gaining more space in the national and international markets for the quality of manufactured products, weight and wide application. From the additivation of materials the FRP can gain significant improvements when we speak of mechanical resistance to fire, water or problems caused by nature. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of anti-flame retardants incorporated in the polymer composite and to evaluate the flexural strength of these materials. This idea arose from difficulties encountered in the flexural test and in the flammability test of the FRP posts and crosses added in the Rio Grande do Norte company that manufactures these products. Organic flame retardants (decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO)) and inorganic (antimony trioxide (Sb2O3)) were incorporated into the glass fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester resin. According to the laboratory investigation, we concluded that all formulations presented fairly homogeneous mechanical results when analyzed with the standard deviations. And the perfect formulation was the only one that passed the flammability test with the composition of 5% antimony trioxide and 6% decabromodiphenyl oxide
