Resumo:This paper investigates 60 GHz communication technology, its propagation characteristics, regulatory aspects and current commercial solutions. The concept of optical communication in free space (FSO – Free Space Optics) is introduced and the advantages and difficulties of an FSO link are analyzed. 60 GHz links are very advantageous. They can offer high bit rates and security. Additionally, the 60 GHz band is license free. At last, a project of a link between two points will be studied as a way to prove the viability of 60 GHz and FSO links. The FSO communication will be presented as a backup to counteract for impairments on the 60 GHz link.
