In this work, the migration rates from the rural to the urban areas from 1980 to 2010 were used as a basis, in the circumstances of the decrease of the rural population, the causes of the occurrence of this migratory flow and the transformation in the urban space that received this migrant population. Although there are public policies that encourage family farming, numerous factors continue to instigate the rural population to move in search of better living conditions in the city. Natural factors were very relevant for this type of migration to take place in the region, such as drought periods and the cotton crisis. There were also socioeconomic factors, since the 80's the economy of the city surpassed in relation to the rural economy, which generated changes in the economic base of the municipality, Caicó began to have an urban economy, based on the tertiary sector, which has further increased the encouragement of families in search of opportunities offered by the city. As áreas rurais brasileiras passam por constantes alterações em sua configuração, tornando-se cada vez mais difícil o entendimento das relações entre estas com a área urbanizada. Neste trabalho utilizaram-se como base as taxas migratórias do meio rural para o urbano no período de 1980 a 2010, nas circunstâncias da diminuição da população ruralista, as causas da ocorrência desse fluxo migratório e a transformação no espaço urbano que recebeu essa população migrante. Embora existam políticas públicas que incentive a agricultura familiar, inúmeros fatores continuam instigando a população rural a se deslocar em busca de melhores condições de vida na cidade. Fatores de ordem natural foram bastante relevantes para que esse tipo de migração ocorresse na região, como períodos de estiagem e a crise da cotonicultura.
