Resumo:Brazilian rural areas have undergone constant changes in their configuration, making it increasingly difficult to understand the relationship between these and the urbanized area. In this work, the migration rates from the rural to the urban areas from 1980 to 2010 were used as a basis, in the circumstances of the decrease of the rural population, the causes of the occurrence of this migratory flow and the transformation in the urban space that received this migrant population. Although there are public policies that encourage family farming, numerous factors continue to instigate the rural population to move in search of better living conditions in the city. Natural factors were very relevant for this type of migration to take place in the region, such as drought periods and the cotton crisis. There were also socioeconomic factors, since the 80's the economy of the city surpassed in relation to the rural economy, which generated changes in the economic base of the municipality, Caicó began to have an urban economy, based on the tertiary sector, which has further increased the encouragement of families in search of opportunities offered by the city.
