Resumo:The school is an environment in which different types of ideas circulate that seek to embrace the reality of the students, because of that, considering gender as the identity of the subjects and as a constituent part of the reality of these, the present article aims to present and analyze the way in which elementary school teachers have understood and discussed genders and sexualities issues in the school environment. For this, interviews were conducted with nineteen teachers who work in four public and private schools in the municipalities of Natal and Parnamirim, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The data were analyzed in a qualitative way, enabling the qualification of the experiences of these subjects and their understandings around the central question. For this, we dialogued with Louro (1997, 2000, 2008), Butler (2000, 2003), Beauvoir (1949), among other scholars. The results demonstrate that the main obstacles for this discussion to have a place in the school environment are the lack of knowledge about gender, by teachers and the school community, and the silence that is imposed on this theme by the traditional discourse and religious movement that circulates in our society.
