Resumo:The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of wind energy as a viable new alternative energy in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Currently, the main sources of energy used in Brazil and in the world are still those from non-renewable fossil resources. After the energy crisis in the late 1990s, the country has implemented investment policies in research and development of new sources of power generation, in order to modify the Brazilian energy matrix. In this context, investments earmarked funds for various renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics, hydro and wind. Research has shown that the Northeast is fertile ground for wind energy production, whose complex are expanding in the region. In Rio Grande do Norte, the João Câmara of municipalities, Parazinho and Pedra Grande, located in the Mato Grande region, show great potential for the implementation of wind power as an alternative source in the electricity generation process in Rio state Grande do Norte.
