In this sense in Rio Grande do Norte also followed this trend with significant progress in reducing child labor. Still it is an active problem, especially on Metropolitan Region of Natal (RMN), where just look around and find her children and adolescents exercising numerous professional activities. Thus, the aim of this paper is to present an overview of the occupational status of children and adolescents and address its concept, causes and effects as well as their size and behavior in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, showing the districts within the metropolitan area of Natal, from the Population Census conducted in 2010. For this, the methodology consisted initially of a literature review with reading texts, including some theoretical interpretations related to the issue of child labor. We then carried the collection of secondary data, where an overview was drawn on early work in state and RMN, portraying their specific separately in each spatiality, especially in the presentation of data on aspects related to age, gender, color and race, household situation, socioeconomic status of families, activities and occupations and education. The results showed that the main characteristics of children and adolescents who were in work situations were basically the same for the Rio Grande do Norte and for living in the Metropolitan Region of Natal. Thus, child labor was exercised mostly by boys who were aged between 16 and 17 years old, were declared as black or brown, lived in the city, exercised non-agricultural activities in the position of employees in Overall, with a working day between 15-39 hours per week and not attending school. Therefore, it is concluded that, although the incidence of child labor to be decreasing, still, a large number of children and adolescents continue to work. Thus, the child labor eradication process can be more effective the higher the opportunities created for families who are in vulnerable situations and such an initiative requires the completion of targeted, but also it is necessary cultural changes of a structural nature in society.

Em âmbito mundial e nacional, o trabalho infantil é um fato persistente com uma longa trajetória histórica, que apesar de, nas duas últimas décadas, ter apresentado uma significativa redução, ainda, continua como um desafio presente. Neste sentido, o Rio Grande do Norte também acompanhou essa tendência, com significativos avanços na redução da mão de obra infantil. Porém, ainda, se trata de um problema ativo, sobretudo, na Região Metropolitana de Natal (RMN), onde basta olhar ao redor dela e encontrar crianças e adolescentes exercendo inúmeras atividades laborais. Deste modo, o objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar um panorama da situação ocupacional das crianças e adolescentes e tratar de sua conceituação, causas e efeitos, bem como sua dimensão e comportamento no estado do Rio Grande do Norte, evidenciando os municípios que compõem a Região Metropolitana de Natal, a partir dos dados do Censo Demográfico realizado em 2010. Para isso, a metodologia utilizada consistiu, inicialmente, de uma revisão bibliográfica com leitura de textos, abrangendo algumas interpretações teóricas relacionadas à questão do trabalho infantil. Em seguida foi realizada a coleta de dados secundários, onde uma visão geral foi traçada sobre o trabalho precoce no estado e na RMN, retratando suas especificidades, separadamente, em cada espacialidade, com destaque na apresentação de dados sobre os aspectos relacionados à idade, ao gênero, cor/raça, situação de domicílio, situação socioeconômica das famílias, atividades e ocupações e à escolaridade. Os resultados encontrados revelaram que as principais características das crianças e dos adolescentes que estavam em situação de trabalho eram basicamente as mesmas para o Rio Grande do Norte e para os que residiam na Região Metropolitana de Natal. Assim, o trabalho infantil era exercido, em sua maioria, por meninos que estavam na faixa etária entre 16 e 17 anos de idade, eram declarados como negros ou pardos, residentes na zona urbana, exerciam atividades não-agrícolas na posição de empregados, em geral, com uma jornada de trabalho entre 15 a 39 horas semanais e não frequentavam a escola. Portanto, conclui-se que, apesar de a incidência do trabalho infantil estar diminuindo, ainda, um grande número de crianças e adolescentes continuam trabalhando.
