Resumo:The heterogeneity of family agriculture is a reflection of social and economic diversity within the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Thus, it is possible to verify significant advances in relation to the definition and understanding of the characteristics and the meaning of the social group called family agriculture, mainly regarding the recognition of its economic diversity and social heterogeneity. The objective of this work is to offer a contribution to understanding the economic diversity of family agriculture in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. It is a study based on data from the 2006 Census of Agriculture on the profile and characteristics of family agriculture in the NB, using a classification based on the value of the agricultural production of these establishments and, secondarily, the income obtained with these activities demonstrating the proportion in comparative. Thus, a typology of family farming establishments in Rio Grande do Norte was developed using indicators of production (more specifically, the quantum of products) and based on data on agricultural and non-agricultural sources of income . The work also points to the need for specific policies for the different types of family establishments that allow the development of different land use strategies and other means of production to achieve social reproduction and generate economic surplus that can ensure adequate income in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
