Resumo:The search for efficiency in all sectors has been increasing and has never been so necessary in relation to public policies. Among them, education, by the volume of financial resources allocated and its importance in the formation of the citizen for socioeconomic development. The objective of this work is to verify the existence of the relationship between the efficiency in the expenses with the basic education offered by the public schools of the municipalities of potiguares and the proficiency obtained by the students of the 9th grade of elementary school. To achieve this goal, the IQGP - Public Expenditure Quality Index and the means obtained in the Brazil Test of 2013 by the state's municipal schools were used. The results show that of the 124, 75 of the municipalities listed are efficient in education expenses. On the other hand, the municipal school averages in Portuguese and mathematics are relatively low, but are in line with the results observed in other Brazilian states. The relationship between the performance presented by the IQGP and the average proficiency obtained in the Brazil Test are weak, indicating that explanatory variables absent in the model should be considered, such as those pointed out in the bibliographic review. In general, there remains concern about the distance observed between the skills obtained and those needed for the good exercise of citizenship and broad access to the labor market. It is hoped that these concerns will be taken up in studies that complement this introductory approach.
