Resumo:The significant increase in industrialization since the end of World War II, combined with the globalization of trade, ports have become key parts of the new logistical chains and dynamics involving sectors in various parts of the world. Thus, it was necessary to rethink the port role in order to guarantee the rise of performance of these facilities in an increasingly competitive environment. In Brazil, this process resulted in the implementation of the Modernization of Ports Act (Federal Act nº 8.630/1993), which aimed to increase the productivity of the country's ports, placing them at the same level required internationally. Twenty-five years after that first legal restructuring, the Port of Natal remains with a modest structure and limited cargo handling, although it has the potential to overcome this scenario of limitations. This study focuses on the current situation of the Port of Natal. Based on documentation from third parties and in an in-depth interview with Port manager, an application of SWOT methodology supports the diagnosis of possibilities of physical and operational developments needed for the Port of Natal to guarantee significant results in the expansion of its productivity and competitiveness.
