Resumo:Bentonite is a clay mineral largely used in civil engineering because your waterproofing propridade, owing of its high expansive power. Therefore, this work aims to study the behavior of bentonite in bofe form which does not have high expansion, it is regarded as a waste in the extraction of bentonite, and correlate them with test results found in literature of more expansive bentonite. In this study will be presented test results with soil-bentonite mixtures in concentrations of 5% and 10% using sandy soil of landfill from Ceará – Mirim/RN. Besides the characterization of the soil, bentonite and mixtures, were made compaction tests, and from them, tests were performed with variations in moisture: permeability, density and shear. The results showed that although the bentonite in bofe form do not show permeability coefficients as low as more expansive bentonites, it still reduces its permeability, presenting in soil-bentonite mixture at the 10% level, acceptable values to be used like waterproofing barriers. Besides that, because it has not considerable expansion, the shear strength was practically unaffected, increasing in some cases. In this regard, soil-bentonite mixture with 10% level can be used either as a waterproofing barriers, as well as in other areas of civil engineering, because improves workability without changing the shearing strength.
