Resumo:The pre-design of armor units on coastal engineering structures consists in the determination of the weight of an individual armor unit in the primary cover layer through empirical formulations. The objective of this article is to determine the weight of an individual armor unit for a range of values of significant wave height in which the structure is susceptible to undergo throughout its life-cycle. It starts with a brief description about the site location of the structure analyzed and further structure detail regarding design function, materials and cross-section. Thereafter, it comments about the wave data base considered in this study. Subsequently, the problem model used is introduced, pointing out important aspects within the pre-design of coastal engineering structures, such as characterization of wave conditions, wave transformation processes and maximum breaker height. Hence, it introduces the different types of empirical formulas to determine the weight individual armor unit in the primary cover layer that were used in this article. Finally, those values of weight are compared between those different types of formulas, considering a range of values of significant wave height.
