Throughout the history of architecture, the green roof has been used with distinct motivations: initially with an aesthetic and recreational decision until, more recently, as an ecological and sustainable alternative. The benefits relation covers aspects such as the mitigation of heat islands and the abstraction and drainage of rainwater., the ability to mitigate floods places the technique as a possible political instrument. Even with an increasing space in theoretical studies, the technique still finds obstacles for its practical expansion. In this way, this work intends to carry out a bibliographical review that brings together the historical positioning, some benefits, application techniques and discusses the main obstacles. O telhado verde pode ser definido como uma estrutura que permite suportar vegetação sobre a cobertura de uma edificação. Trata-se de uma técnica construtiva que vêm ganhando visibilidade em diferentes frentes de estudo. Ao longo da história da arquitetura, o telhado verde vem sendo utilizado com motivações distintas: à principio com uma decisão estética e recreativa até, mais recentemente, como uma alternativa ecológica e sustentável. A relação de benefícios abarca aspectos como a amenização das ilhas de calor e a captação e drenagem de águas pluviais. Mesmo com um espaço cada vez maior nos estudos teóricos, a técnica ainda encontra entraves para sua expansão prática.
